Wallace appoints Matthew Pryke as Partner and Head of Commercial and IP
May 2009
Wallace is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Pryke to the firm’s partnership. Matthew joined the firm in 2006, and following his appointment as head of commercial and IP, he has recently been promoted to partner.
Matthew joined Wallace from A1GP World Cup of Motorsport where he was Legal Counsel. Following Wallace’s recruitment of Matthew, a dedicated unit has been developed within the firm which focuses solely on commercial, IP and brand protection advice primarily in the technology, media/entertainment and sport arenas. The firm’s commercial team has traditionally advised a wide range of clients in these sectors and Matthew has contributed to consolidating and building on the existing practice by forming and leading a team of commercially focused experts.
In the past year Matthew and other members of the commercial and IP team have advised A1GP World Cup of Motorsport on numerous matters including management of its global trademark portfolio, Piers Adam in relation to Mahiki nightclub and Jane Hewland - owner of Hewland International - in connection with a new television programme. He also recently represented Models 1 and Yasmin Le Bon in relation to the highly publicised new “YLB” fashion line for high street store Wallis.
Matthew has introduced a range of new clients to the firm such as W&G Foyle (Foyles Bookshops), Crewcard Network, Link Asset and Securities, Seatwave, Cantos Communications, ADVS UK and African Rainbow Consulting. He has also helped build on relationships with many of the firm’s existing clients and the team has been advising on commercial and IP matters for companies such as Penna Consulting (an AIM listed HR consulting group – the most profitable company on the AIM exchange in 2008 - and previously a client of the firm’s real estate department, which now uses Wallace for all its commercial, IP, IT, project and outsourcing work), Henry Schein, SuperDerivatives, ID Business Solutions and Fine and Country.
Rex Newman, managing partner at Wallace, commented, “Matthew has been a tireless force in building the firm’s credentials as a serious player in the sport, technology and media sectors. He has quickly proven himself as a very capable individual and has helped bring together the various strands of the firm’s commercial and IP offering to form a strategic function dedicated solely to this practice area. In the current economic conditions this is an area which attracts attention as businesses realise the importance of protecting their brand and their intellectual property. Protecting a company’s assets and getting sound commercial advice is more important than ever, since more is at stake.”
Wallace recruited Matthew in response to the ever-growing client demand for IP and brand management advice. The firm’s commercial team has always provided support to clients in these areas and an increasing need called for a dedicated senior lawyer to manage the practice and lead the way in identifying and exploiting new opportunities. With a history of advising technology companies, football clubs, fashion and retail companies and providing a range of advice to clients in the media and entertainment sector, Wallace has been well placed to build on this foundation and cement its position as a serious player in commercial, IP and brand protection.
